I present this piece from my Land of Smiles collection, inspired by the traditional clothing of Thailand and the countryside throughout Southeast Asia. I backpacked across the region and experienced incredible landscapes, vibrant culture, and a strong connection between everyday dress and garments once worn by royalty. That blend of heritage and contemporary style shaped the concept behind this design.
My challenge was to merge the region’s modern fashion with its traditional subgroups and create something truly ready to wear. During my travels, I found this beautiful cotton batik fabric from Indonesia. Batik is one of the most celebrated textiles in Southeast Asia, so I combined its tradition with western construction techniques to bring this ensemble to life.
The design features a fabric belted dirndl skirt paired with a separate tunic blouse. The skirt comes with a belt but can be worn without. It is easy to put on by wrapping it around the waist and snapping it closed. It fits at the waist and flows freely through the rest of the silhouette. It is a great skirt to pair with a tank top or a simple shirt on a beautiful day out.
I created this piece to be versatile, comfortable, and reflective of the region that inspired it.
