This dress was inspired by West African culture and textile traditions. The style is semi casual and showcases an expressive use of Malian handwoven fabric that always draws compliments. The material is Bogolanfini, more commonly known as Mud Cloth. It originates from Mali and is created through a traditional process of dyeing and fermenting the cloth in mud.
Although Mud Cloth is now available globally, authentic Bogolanfini is still made by hand. It must be handspun and is only produced in smaller pieces rather than large yardage. Because of this, many modern versions are replicated to mimic the Malian look. This ensemble uses real Bogolanfini, which explains both the rarity of the textile and the higher price. It truly is one of a kind.
The design features a peplum drape with inseam pockets and a halter neckline. The garment is made entirely from cotton. Due to the delicate nature of the fabric, I recommend dry cleaning. A gentle hand wash is another option if done with care.
I created this dress to celebrate the artistry of Mali and to honor the tradition behind this extraordinary textile.
